In the distance, Hussern-les-Chateaux, with its castle built in the 11th and 12th centuries by the Counts of the Nordgau, the most powerful family in Alsace. A single castle divided into 3 independent family units, each with its own keep. Only the 3 pink sandstone keeps remain of the '3 castles' of Hussern/Eguisheim. They are from South to North (l-r here) Weckmund, Wahlenbourg and Dagsbourg. The castle was finally abandoned in the 14th century. -
