Eguisheim
Eguisheim,
the birthplace of winegrowing in Alsace, has 1590 inhabitants and lies between
gentle hillsides covered with 339 hectares of vines.
It is at the heart of the Alsace wine region, at an altitude of 210 m, it is 5km from Colmar and close to the European capital of Strasbourg and also Freiburg and Basle. Pope St Leo IX was born here, and Eugisheim enjoys an international reputation.
Fortified in 1257, Eugisheim is proud of its picturesque concentric narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses and rich floral decoration (4-flower rating and National Grand Prix award holder since 1989)
Its 16 tithe courts, fountains, 12th century church (with 13th century 'opening virgin' statue and Callinet organ), and 8th century castle , all contribute to its historic character.
Thanks to its winegrower's skill, and its remarkable soils and exceptional microclimate, the village hosts at least 33 growers and two very good Grands Crus, Eichberg and Pfersigberg. They are shared with Husseren-les-Chateaux some 150 meters altitude above Eguisheim. While Pfersigberg is more restrained, Eichberg gives big wines with an exotic character. Pfersigberg probably ranks first for Riesling, Pinot Gris and Muscat while Eichberg is ideal for Gewurztraminer.
